WHAT HAPPENED?
The defending champions were awarded a penalty in the 11th minute of the match after Cesar Tarrega brought down Kylian Mbappe inside the Valencia. After a VAR check, the defender was shown a yellow card and a spot kick was awarded to Madrid. Vinicius Jr. took a terrible penalty as his weak shot was comfortably saved by Liverpool-bound Giorgi Mamardashvili.

The Brazilian's miss from the penalty spot proved costly for Los Blancos as, just a couple of minutes later, they conceded the opening goal. Valencia won a corner and Diego Lopez curled in an inch-perfect cross inside the Madrid box. Mouctar Diakhaby rose above Antonio Rudiger and converted a perfect header to send his team in front.
